Weather

These sites offer a range of real-time and forecast data for the weather-sensitive aviator.

If you’re in the final stages of preparing for a flight then you’ll appreciate up-to-the-minute wind and weather observations for the UK and Continental regions from the terrific XCWeather (also available via WAP on your mobile, by the way).  You should also try Skylink Weather.

For comprehensive UK forecasts, see Met Office Online.  You’ll need to subscribe to the Aviation service for the most detailed information, but you can get a lot for free.

You should find NOAA’s READY service very useful as you can create a meteogram forecast for any location worldwide from their GFS forecast models.  Go to READY - Real-time Environmental Applications and Display system.

A handy set of Europe-wide pre-set meteograms, graphical predictions and Meteosat images are available from Meteoblue - University of Basel.

High-resolution satellite photos from the NOAA polar orbiters are readily downloaded from Dundee Satellite Receiving Station once you have registered.

For those who like traditional synoptic charts, then the recently redesigned USAFE 21st Operational Weather Squadron site provides an excellent set.  For real-time charting, go along to Meteorologica weather superstore.

If you are of a more technical disposition, you should visit U.S. Naval European Meteorology and Oceanography Command - Satellite Images where you’ll get all the detailed images from Meteosat 8.
