The Dick Wirth Medal

A total of five medals to be awarded for contributions to safety or other major achievements in ballooning.

Dick Wirth was a co-founder of Thunder Balloons and was just as energetic in competitive ballooning, in flying just for fun and friendship. All who knew him have collections of stories about Dick's infectious enthusiasm for ballooning and his reputation as a great extrovert, symbolised by his famous gold wellies. Dick Wirth died in a ballooning accident in Albuquerque in 1982.
